It’s Official: Joe Mettle Confirms Break from 2026 Ghana Music Awards

The verdict is in. Gospel icon Joe Mettle is officially taking a breather from the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs). For over a decade, his name has been synonymous with the ceremony. However, this year, the “Kadosh” singer is trading the trophy hunt for some much-needed headspace.

A Long Time Coming

Interestingly, this isn’t a snap decision. Mettle has been dropping hints for nearly four years. He recently confirmed his absence on the New Day morning programme. Consequently, the gospel categories will look very different this season.

While some might see this as a shock, Mettle views it as a necessity. He isn’t walking away because he’s “too big” for the stage. In fact, he was quick to shut down any whispers of arrogance. For him, the issue is simply time.

The Cost of the Campaign

Why the hiatus? Essentially, it comes down to the grind. Being a nominee is exhausting work. It requires constant promotion and a massive logistical commitment.

“Sometimes, your schedule is just too packed,” Mettle explained. He noted that the public often mistakes a lack of campaigning for a bad attitude. Conversely, the reality is far more relatable: he’s simply spread too thin. By stepping back, he can finally focus on his global ministry without the pressure of a points race.

Fresh Faces in the Spotlight

There is a silver lining for the rest of the industry, though. Mettle’s absence creates “breathing space” for his peers. Furthermore, he explicitly stated that he wants to see other talented gospel acts get their moment in the sun.

For years, Mettle has dominated the gospel categories. By opting out of the 2026 submissions, he is effectively handing over the keys. This move allows the next generation of ministers to vie for the top honours.

A Legacy Untouched

Naturally, Mettle has nothing left to prove. He made history in 2017 as the first gospel artist to win Artiste of the Year. He broke the glass ceiling for an entire genre.

Ultimately, his legacy is secure. Even without a 2026 nomination, his influence remains the gold standard in West African music. He might be skipping the red carpet this time, but his voice continues to lead the way.

Is this a smart move for Joe, or will the TGMAs feel empty without him? We want to hear your take! Tell us who you think will sweep the Gospel categories this year in the comments.
