Ghana Culture Forum urged to prioritize innovation and talent development for economic advancement

The Ghana Culture Forum (GCF) has been urged to focus on innovation and talent development within the cultural and creative industries as a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity. This advice came from Edward Moukala, the Head of the UNESCO Office in Ghana, during a meeting with GCF leadership.

Mr. Moukala emphasized UNESCO’s commitment to supporting cultural initiatives in Ghana and highlighted the importance of aligning cultural policies with local needs. He stated, “Prioritize not only entertainment but also innovation and talent development aimed at economic growth, addressing youth needs such as employment, poverty reduction, and access to opportunities.” He further urged the GCF to leverage culture as a tool to address contemporary challenges while placing youth at the center of sustainability efforts.

The meeting underscored the collaborative partnership between UNESCO and GCF to advance cultural advocacy and development. Discussions included ongoing and future initiatives to promote Ghana’s cultural heritage, with an emphasis on cultural preservation and education to deepen the understanding of Ghanaian identity among the youth.

The Vice-Chairman of GCF, Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, shared updates on the Forum’s activities and plans for 2025, including advocacy and research projects and preparations for the Ghana Culture Week Celebrations scheduled for March 2025. Both parties expressed optimism about future collaborations, focusing on leveraging UNESCO’s global resources to address key challenges in Ghana’s cultural sector, such as funding and capacity building.

The meeting also explored potential projects aimed at enhancing cultural initiatives and strengthening the cultural sector in Ghana. This interaction represents a significant step in fortifying partnerships between local cultural organizations and international bodies like UNESCO, fostering a dynamic and sustainable cultural landscape in Ghana.

The meeting was attended by UNESCO representatives Carl Ampah, Culture Specialist, and Rose Mends, Culture Officer. The GCF delegation included Edwina Assan, General Secretary; Makeba Boateng, Treasurer; Samuel Gyandoh, Executive Member; Ken Fiati, Executive Member; and Jessica Osei-Bosumpem.
