Mala Majo Festival Set to Return This September

The Main Lorry Station at Nungua in Accra will come alive on Saturday, September 6, with the rhythms of traditional music and dance as multi-instrumentalist, choreographer, and singer Fredrick Nii Kpakpo Addo and his One Spirit Africa team present another edition of the Mala Majo Music and Dance Festival.

This annual free festival unites progressive traditional and neo-traditional performers, offering a stage to showcase their skills, inspire one another, and celebrate cultural excellence. It also serves as a way for the organizers to give back to the community that nurtured their rise to international recognition.

This year’s lineup includes Dela Botri, Adotey Tetor, Nyonmo Da, Full Energy, Efutupa Crew, Lipstick Queens, One Spirit Africa Band, African Dance Rhythms, Hejole Dance Ensemble, Nana Senti, Akwantufuo, Emmanuel Dance Ensemble, and Universal Wonderful Academy.

According to Fredrick Addo, the festival seeks to strengthen cultural identity among young performers. “As they expand into the performing arts world, it is important they understand their unique cultural roots and how to share that with the rest of the world,” he emphasized.

Over the past 15 years, One Spirit Africa has taken African culture to audiences across Australia, Europe, and the Americas through captivating performances and workshops.

This year, the festival introduces a new educational focus on mental health, in collaboration with Ghana’s Mental Health Authority and MindFreedom Ghana. Officials will be present to share insights, highlighting the importance of mental well-being for both artists and the community.

Fredrick Addo stressed the need for support: “Many young, talented people are struggling with habits that hold them back. We want them to join us, enjoy the music and dance, and engage with mental health experts. This could open new opportunities for them.”

With many young talents eager to shape their futures through art, the Mala Majo Music and Dance Festival continues to inspire, spreading the message that dedication and hard work make anything possible. The 2025 edition promises yet another uplifting and memorable celebration of tradition, culture, and resilience.
