The one-week celebration of the late Teddy Osei, a founding member of the legendary Ghanaian music group Osibisa, is set for Thursday, January 30, at his family home in Chirapatre, Kumasi.
This traditional Ghanaian ceremony, held to commemorate one week since his passing, will bring together family, friends, and fans of the renowned saxophonist from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Teddy Osei played a pivotal role in Osibisa, one of the most influential African bands of all time. Known for their signature fusion of Afrobeat, rock, and jazz, Osibisa rose to global prominence in the 1970s.
Osei passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the age of 88. His musical journey began in his hometown Kumasi, where he developed a passion for instruments at a young age.
While studying in Sekondi, he formed his first band, The Comets, alongside friends. After completing his education, he briefly worked as a building inspector before pursuing his musical aspirations in London.
In 1962, a government grant enabled him to study at a London music school for three years. However, political shifts in Ghana led him to remain in England, where he co-founded Osibisa in 1969, shaping a new era in African music.
