ACCRA-one50: A Transformative New Urban Milestone

The city of Accra is preparing for a historic transformation. The Foundation for Contemporary Art (FCA) – Ghana has announced ACCRA-one50, a two-year multidisciplinary project. This initiative marks 150 years since the British declared Accra the capital of the Gold Coast in 1877. It is a bold effort to rethink the identity of a rapidly changing African metropolis.

Rather than a simple celebration, the project takes a critical look at the city’s journey. It explores the historical, spatial, and political forces that have shaped Accra. Since 1877, the city has been redefined by colonial rule, independence, and rapid urbanisation. ACCRA-one50 provides a platform for scholars and the public to reflect on these complex realities.

The project began its detailed research phase in February 2026. Public programming will follow from November 2026 through to December 2027. This phase will feature a diverse range of activities across the city. It positions Accra as a vital site for global conversations on cultural production.

What to Expect from ACCRA-one50

The initiative will unfold through several creative and intellectual channels:

  • Research and Art: Spatial research projects and new art commissions.
  • Public Dialogue: Lectures, symposia, and neighbourhood-based activations.
  • Exhibitions: Major showcases and workshops designed for public engagement.
  • Media: New digital platforms and specialised publications.
