This weekend, the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill in Accra will welcome Swiss vibraphonist Thomas Dobler and the GHJazz Collective on Saturday, October 12, and Senegalese bassist Alune Wade & Band on Sunday, October 13. Guests can expect to enjoy some captivating jazz and other shades of contemporary popular music.
When he takes the vibraphone, skilled composer, arranger, bandleader, and instructor Dobler skillfully weaves all of his talents together for colorful runs. Since 2022, he has traveled in and out of Ghana, working as a facilitator at the Accra Jazz Academy or as a director accompaning students from the Haute Ecole de Musique (HEMU) in Switzerland.
He is a creative player with a strong jazz background who explores the sounds, textures, and artistic possibilities that are always at his disposal. Because of this, his next performance at +233 with the GHJazz Collective should provide a fun evening of jazz with lots of inventive twists.
Alune Wade co-wrote two songs on the critically acclaimed “Afrodeezia” album by bass legend Marcus Miller in 2015. For a performance of their collaboratively written song “Hylife” from the Afrodeezia collection on International Jazz Day 2022 at the UN General Assembly Hall in New York City, he reunited with Miller and other musicians.
On October 13, Alune Wade will perform with a group of talented international musicians that include Victor Ademofe from Nigeria on trumpet, Harry Ahonlonsou from Benin on saxophone, Bernard Ayisa from Ghana on saxophone, Cedric Duchemamann from Reunion Island on keyboard, Alix Goffic from French Guiana on drums, and Stephen Dufy from the United States on sousaphone.
Over the years, +233 has played host to some incredibly talented bassists, including Manu Falla from Benin, Nee Sackey from Ghana, and Richard Bona and Ettiene Mbappe from Cameroun. Jazz fans who have an ear for “killer” bass lines should definitely check out Alune Wade’s incredible technique on the instrument.
Overall, discriminating music lovers should have a great weekend at the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill on October 12 and 13, featuring the esteemed Thomas Dobler and Alune Wade. The concerts start both days at 9:00 p.m.
