The grand finale of the maiden edition of Sing Like Obaapa (SLOPA) is set to take place on Sunday, November 24, at the Disciples of Christ Ministry located at Weija Junction, Accra.
This announcement was made during a recent media launch, where the three finalists competing for the top prize were introduced. Organized by Francopa Management, SLOPA is set to become an annual event, with registration for the next edition opening on December 1, 2024.
At the launch, renowned gospel artists such as Empress Gifty, Abena Serwaa Ophelia, Broda Sammy, Selena Boateng, and Mavis Asare were in attendance alongside other emerging talents. Obaapa Christy, the inspiration behind the competition, expressed her excitement, stating, “The best way to show the world that God has truly blessed me is by leaving a legacy. I am confident this competition will discover many talents that will benefit the gospel music industry.”
During the event, the three finalists—Nana Yaw Prince, Nora Brown, and Nana Yaa Evelyn—performed some of Obaapa Christy’s hit songs. The grand finale will also feature performances by Kwabena Kwabena and SP Kofi Sarpong.
Sing Like Obaapa (SLOPA) was officially launched on August 5, unveiling 15 contestants to compete for a spot in the finals. An expert judging panel, including Noble Nketia, Fred Kyei Mensah, and Reverend Josephine Agyei, selected the top three finalists.
SLOPA is part of Obaapa Christy’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the industry that has supported her rise to fame. According to her manager, Nana Kwame Darkwah, the three winners will receive special recording opportunities. “Obaapa Christy’s team will write songs for the winners and assist them in recording with a music producer of their choice,” he said.
Obaapa Christy, a celebrated gospel musician with over two decades in the industry, is known for hits such as “W’agye Me,” “Yare Yeya,” “Onto Nko,” “Ma Enye Yie,” and “The Glory.” She won Gospel Artist of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2007 Ghana Music Awards and received a National Honour from former President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2008.
