Hundreds of Ghanaian movie enthusiasts filled the Silverbird Cinemas at both the Accra Mall and West Hills Mall on Friday, 19th September 2025, for the highly anticipated premiere of The Fisherman, written and directed by Zoey Martinson.
The event drew a diverse audience that included prominent creatives, media personalities, and notable public figures.

The Fisherman follows the story of Atta Oko, an aging fisherman who teams up with a talking fish and three young companions on a journey to the city in search of a loan to purchase their own boat.
Portrayed by Ricky Adelayitor, Atta Oko dreams of becoming the boat chief of his town after years of dedication. However, the title instead goes to the arrogant son (Ajeezay) of the outgoing chief, played by veteran actor Fred Amugi. Despite his education, the young chief’s son lacks both the knowledge and skill to lead at sea.
Disheartened, Atta Oko encounters a talking fish, which he interprets as bearing a traditional message. Soon after, he befriends three ambitious youths—Kobina (William Lamptey), Shasha (Endurance Dzedzo), and Emmanuel (Kiki-Romi)—who dream of starting their own boat crew. Their quest to raise money for a boat sets the stage for an adventurous and heartwarming narrative.
The premiere audience responded with glowing reviews, commending the film’s high production quality, compelling storyline, and strong performances.
Film critic and writer Tony Asankomah praised The Fisherman, noting that it “reminds you of the prospects and potential of the Ghanaian film industry and its ability to tell stories rooted in our folklore while addressing contemporary themes in an engaging way.”
Beyond its local success, The Fisherman holds international recognition as Ghana’s first official selection to the Venice Film Festival and has already earned an award at the Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival.
Produced by Luu Vision Media, the film further cements Ghana’s growing presence on the global cinema stage.
