Ghanaian cinema has reached a historic milestone as The Fisherman, produced by Kofi Owusu-Afriyie of Luu Vision Media, made its official debut at the esteemed 81st Venice International Film Festival. Directed by Zoey Martinson, the film is Ghana’s first official entry at the globally renowned festival, premiering to a sold-out, enthusiastic audience that awarded it a standing ovation. Although screened out of competition, The Fisherman garnered remarkable praise, winning the prestigious Fellini Medal through UNESCO’s Enrico Fulchignoni Prize. Now in its 36th year, the prize is a distinguished ICFT-UNESCO award honoring films that exemplify the values of peace and tolerance championed by the organization.

Martinson’s narrative, rooted in her personal experiences in Keta, offers a vibrant portrayal of resilience, community, and the coastal livelihoods integral to Ghanaian heritage. Shot entirely in Ghana, The Fisherman features a celebrated cast, including Ricky Adeleyitar, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi, with Nigeria’s Dulo Harris. The ensemble cast is rounded out by Fred Amugi, Roselyn Ngissah, Dorothy Konadu, Mynna Otoo, Adjeezay, Adwoa Akoto, Princess Fathia Nkrumah, Papa Osei, Andrew Adote, and Shadrack Agyare.

The Fisherman also excels in its artistic execution, with Adam Carboni on cinematography, Gifty Mawuena Sossavi as costume designer, and Douglas Baiden leading production design. Edited by Jasmin Way, with a powerful score by Avi Amon, the film’s visual effects were crafted by Nurudeen Tahiru and Daria Amai Shelton, and casting was directed by Mawuko Kuadzi.

Reflecting on the Venice premiere, producer Kofi Owusu-Afriyie shared, “Being here and seeing this story resonate with audiences from diverse backgrounds is a triumph for Ghanaian cinema and the African film community as a whole.” Produced by Luu Vision Media, led by Owusu-Afriyie, King Luu, and Korey Jackson, The Fisherman is actively seeking distribution.
