Telecel Ghana Marks World Environment Day with 10,000 New Trees Planted at Chipa Forest Reserve

Telecel Ghana Plants Over 10,000 Trees at Chipa Forest Reserve in Honour of World Environment Day 2025.

In a bold commitment to environmental sustainability, Telecel Ghana mobilised around 150 employee volunteers alongside students from Golden Sunbeam International School to plant over 10,000 tree seedlings at the Chipa Forest Reserve in Kordiabe. The initiative, held under the scorching sun in the reserve’s northeastern quadrant, marked the telco’s celebration of World Environment Day 2025.

This large-scale reforestation effort forms part of Telecel Ghana’s ongoing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, which includes integrating renewable energy and supporting tree planting to combat land degradation. It also aligns with the Government of Ghana’s Tree for Life campaign, which aims to restore the country’s forest cover. So far, the company has planted more than 30,000 trees across the Achimota and Chipa forest reserves.

“Our commitment to protecting the environment is a core aspect of our sustainability agenda,” said Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, who led the initiative by planting the first tree. “We’ve planted 20,000 trees at Chipa between 2024 and 2025, and I urge other companies to support similar projects for the health of our communities and planet.”

Located in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, the Chipa Forest Reserve has suffered years of environmental degradation due to illegal logging and encroachment. The reforestation drive, undertaken in collaboration with the Ghana Forestry Commission, stands out as one of the largest corporate-backed restoration efforts in the region.

“Chipa is a heavily degraded reserve, so Telecel’s annual collaboration with us is crucial in returning it to its natural state,” noted Linda Ansah, District Manager of the Tema Ada Forest District. She assured that all seedlings planted would be nurtured to ensure long-term survival and growth.

World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5 under the UN Environment Programme since 1973, calls on individuals and organisations to adopt eco-friendly practices. This year’s theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, emphasises the urgency of eliminating plastic waste and fostering sustainable living.

Young participants like Edem Caleb Agbodja, a junior high student from Golden Sunbeam and Wildlife Club member, found personal meaning in the exercise. “I’m excited to be part of this. Planting trees helps our planet. I hope other young people join in and help protect the environment,” he shared.

To cap the day’s celebration, participants toured the nearby Shai Hills Resource Reserve as part of an ecotourism experience. Looking ahead, Telecel Ghana plans to plant an additional 5,000 trees in Kumasi during its upcoming Ashanti Month activities this June.
