Spotify and Sony Music Publishing organize a Music Publishing Camp in Ghana

Spotify recently partnered with Sony Music Publishing to host a dedicated Publishing Camp in Ghana, aimed at fostering creativity and equipping participants with advanced skills in music production and promotion.

The event featured exclusive panel discussions led by industry experts, including renowned producer GuiltyBeatz and Wale Davies (Tec) of Show Dem Camp. These sessions provided valuable insights into production trends, songwriting techniques, and promotional strategies tailored to the evolving music industry.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, emphasizing its potential to elevate Ghana’s music industry. She stated, “Amplifying African artists is at the core of our mission. Every unforgettable song begins with great writing, and hosting this camp with Sony Music Publishing reflects our commitment to nurturing the creative process behind the lyrics, beats, and melodies that captivate audiences.”

During the camp, GuiltyBeatz highlighted the importance of crafting timeless music, encouraging creatives to embrace their artistic freedom and draw inspiration from diverse sources. “Creating something authentic and unique requires trusting your instincts and exploring various perspectives, whether from personal experiences, cultural moments, or the world around you,” he remarked. Similarly, Davies urged attendees to collaborate with individuals who challenge and inspire them to push creative boundaries.

The camp also included a hands-on masterclass attended by approximately 150 participants. This session introduced tools and features available on Spotify for Artists, such as Songwriter Pages, Spotify Clips, and in-app song credits. These resources enable artists, producers, and songwriters to gain deeper insights into their audience, enhance their promotional efforts, and receive recognition for their contributions to hit songs and albums.

Beyond its educational focus, the camp represents a significant step toward empowering African musicians to expand their reach and connect with global audiences through music streaming. Okumu acknowledged the pivotal role of songwriters and producers in shaping the industry, stating, “Their work not only raises the bar but also keeps listeners enchanted with African music.”

Through initiatives like this Publishing Camp, Spotify and Sony Music Publishing aim to inspire and support Africa’s next generation of music creators, paving the way for a vibrant and globally competitive music landscape.
