Rocky Dawuni Urges 24/7 Airplay of Ghanaian Music to Support 24-Hour Economy

Grammy-nominated Ghanaian musician Rocky Dawuni has called on the government and media to adopt intentional cultural policies that prioritize local music as part of Ghana’s 24-hour economy strategy.

During an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Starr 103.5 FM, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Dawuni criticised the increasing dependence on foreign-curated playlists in local clubs and media platforms. He cautioned that this trend undermines the development of Ghana’s creative economy.

“Playlists are becoming global. We’re sitting here using someone else’s playlist,” he remarked. “I go to clubs and hear DJs playing songs curated by people abroad—artists they think should dominate our market.”

Dawuni stressed that if Ghana wants the arts and entertainment sector to make meaningful economic contributions, there must be a conscious effort to promote homegrown talent.

“If we don’t develop our own artists, we won’t build the capacity needed to grow their contribution to our economy,” he stated.

Linking the issue to the country’s push for a 24-hour economy, Dawuni advocated for continuous airplay of Ghanaian music across all media channels.

“If we’re serious about a 24-hour economy, then Ghanaian artists should be played on radio 24/7,” he insisted. “There should be a policy backing it—24 hours.”

When host Bola Ray asked whether this policy should extend to music played in taxis, trucks, and public transport, Dawuni replied emphatically:

“Yes! They should be playing local music—not just the popular ones, but a wide range, including mine.”

His comments add to the growing national conversation about using local music and culture as powerful tools for economic development, job creation, and strengthening national identity.
