The film revisits a turbulent moment in West African history—the 1983 mass deportation of over a million Ghanaians from Nigeria. These returnees arrived in a Ghana already grappling with food shortages, economic hardship, and political instability, creating an even more challenging environment.

Produced by AI Media Limited in partnership with Lemon Tree Publishing & Film, the docu-drama blends archival footage, dramatized scenes, and firsthand testimonies to paint a vivid picture of the deportation’s aftermath and its impact on both Ghana and the wider sub-region.

This story goes beyond Ghana. It’s a West African story. It’s an African story. It’s a global, human story,” said Kwame Boadi, the film’s director.
We created this film to preserve history, ignite dialogue, and raise important questions about migration, identity, and human dignity.

Omo Ghana – Man for Chop delivers a gripping exploration of resilience and the human spirit. Through personal accounts and dramatic reenactments, it unpacks the deeper themes of migration—its causes, consequences, and the interconnectedness of global communities.

According to Kwame Boadi, Franka-Maria Andoh (assistant director), and Oliver Safo (technical director), the decision to stream the film online was driven by a desire to reach a global audience and make the film’s message accessible to viewers everywhere.

Audiences are encouraged to tune into the Joy News YouTube Channel for the digital screening on April 18 and participate in the global #OmoGhanaFilm Watch Party through the live chat. The televised screening on Joy Prime the following evening offers another opportunity for Ghanaians and others across the region to connect with this powerful narrative.
