NFA to Begin Enforcing Film Classification Laws from May 1

The National Film Authority (NFA) has announced that starting May 1, 2025, it will begin enforcing stricter film classification laws in accordance with the Development and Classification of Film Act, 2016 (Act 935).

In a press release signed by Executive Secretary Kafui Danku-Pitcher, the NFA reminded all film practitioners—including producers, distributors, and exhibitors—that any film intended for public exhibition in Ghana must be submitted for classification. This includes feature films, short films, trailers, TV series, documentaries, adverts, and music videos shown on TV, in cinemas, on streaming platforms, or in public spaces.

The National Film Authority of Ghana announces enforcement of film classification laws effective May 1, 2025, requiring all public audiovisual content to be licensed and classified under Act 935.

Effective May 1, all content submitted for classification must come from licensed practitioners—that is, individuals or entities holding a valid Film Producer, Distributor, or Exhibitor Licence issued by the NFA.

The enforcement aims to regulate and streamline Ghana’s film industry, uphold moral and cultural standards, and protect children from inappropriate content. The classification process will consider the socio-cultural impact of specific programmes, particularly those involving sensitive topics such as sex education and adult themes.

While these regulations apply to selected audiovisual content, news, current affairs, sports, teleshopping, and in-house TV productions are exempt.

This move revives efforts first initiated in 2021, when the NFA’s Film Classification Committee was established. The committee’s mandate includes classifying all audio-visual content to align with Ghana’s national values, protect viewers—especially children—and help audiences make informed choices.

The NFA reaffirms its commitment to nurturing a professional and globally competitive film industry through clear legal and ethical frameworks.
