New NFA Board Aims to Engage 1% of Ghanaians in Film Industry Revival

The newly inaugurated Governing Board of the National Film Authority (NFA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to involve at least 1% of Ghana’s population in reviving the local film industry.

At its first meeting on August 19, 2025, the Board outlined a vision focused on tackling two major challenges—distribution and exhibition. According to Chairman Ivan Quashigah, Ghana’s cinema revival depends on building strong and accessible platforms that attract both audiences and investors.

“Our priority is to restore confidence in the Ghanaian film industry by making local content widely accessible. Distribution and exhibition are the lifeblood of the sector, and we are determined to build systems that bring Ghanaian films closer to every citizen while positioning Ghana as a film hub in Africa,” Mr. Quashigah stated.

He explained that if at least 1% of the population—around 347,000 people—consistently engage with Ghanaian films, the impact will ripple across the entire value chain. Producers, distributors, exhibitors, and investors will all benefit from this renewed confidence in the industry.

Furthermore, the meeting emphasized the NFA’s commitment to regulation, development, and collaboration with both local and international partners. The Authority reaffirmed its mission to work with government agencies, guilds, private stakeholders, and global institutions to build a sustainable and competitive film industry.

Attendees at the meeting included Executive Secretary Kafui Danku-Pitcher, Deputy Executive Secretary James Gardiner, and representatives from key institutions such as the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, and UNIMAC’s Institute of Film and Television. Others present were leaders from the Film Producers Association of Ghana, the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts, Women in Film and Television, and the Collective Management Organisation of Audio Visual Rights Owners.

The NFA also urged industry players, investors, and partners to support its vision of creating a dynamic distribution and exhibition ecosystem. This, the Authority said, will not only fuel economic growth but also strengthen Ghana’s cultural identity and elevate the country’s profile on the global stage.
