The National Theatre of Ghana has officially partnered with Image Bureau and April Communications to stage Wole Soyinka’s acclaimed play Death and the King’s Horseman this August.

The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the National Theatre. The play will be performed on August 23 and 24, with encore shows on August 30 and 31 at the National Theatre.
During the signing ceremony, Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, Herbert Malm, highlighted the alignment of this initiative with the Theatre’s core mission of nurturing and promoting the performing arts in Ghana.
“This partnership reaffirms our commitment to supporting the growth of Ghana’s creative industry. The National Theatre has been a cornerstone for the performing arts since it opened in 1992, and we are proud to support this production,” he stated.
He called on theatre lovers and the general public to experience the upcoming performances, which will feature collaboration with the Theatre’s resident groups.
CEO of Image Bureau, George Quaye, expressed enthusiasm about the production, acknowledging the complexities of staging the play but expressing confidence in the National Theatre’s backing.
“Our relationship with the National Theatre began under the previous administration, and we are excited to continue that journey. This play is notoriously challenging, but thanks to the commitment from the current leadership, we’re ready to deliver an extraordinary experience,” he said.
He added that Death and the King’s Horseman demands significant investment and precision, but they are determined to make it one of the most exceptional stage productions in Ghana.
“This isn’t just another performance—it’s an opportunity to raise the bar for African theatre,” Quaye said.
He also revealed that celebrated actor Andrew Tandoh-Adote will take on the lead role in the production.
