Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Ghana’s highest national honour — the Order of the Star of Ghana — during a state banquet hosted in his honour by President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

Expressing his gratitude, Prime Minister Modi described the award as a solemn responsibility to further strengthen cultural and economic ties between India and Ghana. “I accept this honour with deep humility and dedicate it to the youth of both our nations, their dreams, our rich cultural heritage, and our enduring historical bond,” he stated.
He emphasised that the recognition symbolises a renewed commitment to build on the long-standing friendship between the two nations. “India will always stand with the people of Ghana, as a reliable friend and committed development partner,” he assured.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi held bilateral and delegation-level talks with President Mahama. The two leaders witnessed the signing of four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering cultural exchange, traditional medicine (Ayurveda), trade standards, and structured ministerial dialogue.

The two countries also agreed to elevate their relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, aimed at expanding cooperation across key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, digital innovation, and mining.
During the banquet, President Mahama hailed Prime Minister Modi as “a global statesman of transformational leadership,” applauding his achievements in reshaping India’s digital economy and promoting South–South cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to support Ghana’s development priorities, particularly in youth empowerment, digital technology, and sustainable agriculture through interest in the Feed Ghana programme.
He also engaged with members of Ghana’s Indian community, estimated at around 15,000, encouraging them to strengthen people-to-people connections. He announced new scholarship and training programmes for Ghanaian youth at Indian institutions.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in more than three decades. He is scheduled to leave Accra on the morning of Thursday, July 3, heading to Trinidad and Tobago, before proceeding to the BRICS Summit in Brazil.
