Klefe celebrates 2025 Yam Festival

The chiefs, queens, and people of Klefe in the Volta Region climaxed their 2025 Yam Festival on Saturday, September 27, with a grand durbar at Klefe-Demete. The event featured rich cultural displays and attracted troupes and celebrants from across the region.

This year’s celebration was held under the theme “Youth Development – The Future of Our Community.” It also doubled as a fundraiser to support infrastructure projects at the Klefe Technical Institute.

A speech delivered on behalf of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang pledged government’s support to equip the institute. She praised the people of Klefe for their communal spirit and dedication to technical education. According to her, this aligns with government’s agenda to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) nationwide.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang stressed that the youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow but also active participants in today’s development. She said youth unemployment remains a pressing challenge that requires joint action.

Government, she announced, would provide electrical fittings, plumbing materials, paint, fencing supplies, and 40 double-decker beds with mattresses. These will help complete the ongoing dormitory and teachers’ residence projects. She also assured that the administration block, dining hall, dormitories, and classrooms would be prioritized in the next funding cycle.

The Vice President revealed that the Ministry of Education and the TVET Council would provide tools for programmes such as sewing, catering, welding, and fabrication. Plans to supply a school bus to support student internships and apprenticeships were also underway.

She further pledged government’s commitment to address environmental challenges in Klefe. The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation will work with the Klefe Traditional Council on sustainable practices against deforestation, pollution, and illegal mining, while supporting agriculture.

Chief of Staff Alexander Segbefia advised the youth to avoid social vices and embrace technical education for a brighter future.

The Paramount Chief of Klefe, Togbe Koku Dzaga XI, noted that the institute now has 150 students and continues to grow steadily. He expressed hope that government’s support will expand its capacity to produce a skilled workforce. He also urged students to study hard and be worthy ambassadors of the institute.

The festival ended with a fundraising drive that raised GH¢260,000 in support of the technical institute.
