The Ghanaian film industry honored one of its pioneers, Kwaw Ansah, at the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit’s Legacy Awards
The legendary filmmaker received the prestigious Legendary Award in recognition of his immense contributions to the growth and development of the industry. Kwaw Ansah, renowned for his groundbreaking films like Love Brewed in the African Pot and Heritage Africa, has played a pivotal role in shaping Ghanaian cinema. His work not only entertains but also highlights important social issues and cultural heritage.
The third day of the Africa Cinema Summit took place on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra. As part of the day’s events, the Legacy Awards recognized film industry stakeholders across the continent for their significant contributions.
Honored alongside Kwaw Ansah were celebrated Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson and Nigerian stars AY, Kunle Afolayan, and Funke Akindele, with AY taking home two awards for his impactful work in the industry. Other notable Ghanaian recipients included Shirley Frimpong Manso, Leila Djansi, Yolo producer Ivan Quashigah, and Kwaw Ansah, who received the Legendary Award.
While presenting the Legendary Award, which was accepted on Kwaw Ansah’s behalf by his son, Juliet Asante praised the filmmaker, stating, “This is the final award because in Ghana, we all know we stand on the shoulders of the work he has done. He embodies the very essence of this award – the Legacy Award.”
Organized by Ghana’s National Film Authority (NFA), the summit drew a global audience, including executives from the African diaspora and representatives from major investment organizations like Afreximbank and IFC.
Day 1 of the summit was headlined by British actor and IE7&The Akuna Group Chairman Idris Elba, while Day 2 saw Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, serve as the guest of honor. The Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts, and Culture, Mr. Andrew Egyapa Mercer, attended both days. The summit, aimed at fostering collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth in the African cinema industry, concludes on Thursday, October 10.
