If you want hits, focus on highlife, says Kwabena Kwabena

For upcoming artistes who shy away from Highlife music, deeming it outdated, seasoned musician Kwabena Kwabena has a word of caution—they’re making a big mistake.

With nearly two decades in the industry, the Highlife legend firmly believes the genre is the foundation for creating timeless hit songs.

In a recent conversation with Graphic Showbiz, Kwabena Kwabena emphasized that Highlife remains the bedrock of Ghanaian music, even if some regard it as old-fashioned. He noted it’s unfortunate that many young artistes prefer other styles, overlooking how deeply rooted many of today’s hits are in Highlife, proving its enduring appeal and relevance.

“Highlife is thriving, and if you want hits, stick to the genre,” he advised. “Some may think it’s old-school, but many of Ghana’s biggest hits—like Fameye’s Very Soon, King Paluta’s Makoma, KiDi’s Lomo Lomo, and even Stonebwoy’s Jejereje—are all based on Highlife.”

Reflecting on his 20-year music journey, the Aso hitmaker expressed gratitude for the humbling experience and acknowledged the vital role his fans have played in his success.

“I am deeply humbled. I owe everything to Almighty God and to my fans worldwide for their unwavering support over the years,” he shared.

For Kwabena Kwabena, staying relevant in the music scene for nearly two decades is his most significant achievement. “Next year marks 20 years, and maintaining relevance all this time is the greatest gift God has given me,” he concluded.
