Government denies plans to transform National Cathedral site into Cultural Convention Centre

The government has refuted claims that it plans to repurpose the stalled National Cathedral project site into a Cultural Convention Centre.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu addresses press on future of National Cathedral project site

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the reports, stating that President John Mahama has not made any such decision. He clarified that while the 24-hour Secretariat had received a proposal suggesting a new use for the site, it remains just a proposal.

“President Mahama has not taken any such decision. An entity submitted a proposal to the Secretariat regarding a potential new use for the site, but no action has been taken,” Kwakye Ofosu explained in response to a journalist’s question.

He further noted that the future of the National Cathedral site would only be determined after a forensic audit of the project and the operations of the now-dissolved Secretariat is completed.

“A firm decision will be made once the audit findings are in and the full scope of issues is understood,” he added.

The clarification follows growing public speculation over the fate of the site, which has seen limited progress despite millions of cedis in government spending.

Initially introduced as a unifying national symbol of faith, the National Cathedral project has become a subject of intense public debate, largely centered on transparency and the use of state funds.

Earlier in the briefing, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu presented findings from a Deloitte and Touche audit, revealing financial irregularities, procurement breaches, and unsupported spending related to the project.

He also confirmed that the National Cathedral Secretariat has been dissolved, and legal steps are in motion to officially dissolve its Board of Trustees.

The Auditor-General has been tasked to conduct a full forensic audit to establish accountability and guide the government’s next course of action.
