Ghana Transport Fare Increase Takes Effect August 8

Public transport fares across Ghana will see a 20% increase starting Friday, August 8, 2025.

The decision, announced by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) in collaboration with transport unions, aligns with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.

In a joint statement signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman, the Council explained that the fare hike was driven by three main factors significantly affecting transport operators.

Firstly, operators claim they have yet to benefit from any reduction in the cost of spare parts and other essential goods and services, despite a previous 15% fare cut introduced on May 21, 2025.

Secondly, the recent implementation of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy has resulted in an estimated 8% increase in fuel prices, directly inflating operating costs for drivers and transport services.

Thirdly, the deteriorating state of roads nationwide has led to higher maintenance expenses, putting further financial pressure on transport providers.

The 20% fare adjustment will apply to all forms of public transport, including shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” services, intercity long-distance travel, and haulage operations.

The statement emphasized that “all commercial transport operators and companies must implement the new fares and display them clearly at their loading stations.”

The GRTCC urged commuters, operators, and the general public to cooperate to ensure the smooth rollout of the revised fares.

The last fare revision occurred in May this year when a reduction was made due to falling fuel prices and government intervention. However, the GRTCC says current economic challenges and worsening road infrastructure have compelled a review of the pricing structure.
