Representing Ghana were senior officials including Mr. Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy CEO of GTA; Mr. Ekow Sampson, Deputy CEO in charge of Operations; and Mr. Vittus Otto Langmange, Chief Director at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. The delegation actively engaged with global stakeholders to explore collaborative opportunities within the cruise industry.

According to Mr. Aggrey, Ghana’s participation marked a pivotal moment in the country’s ongoing strategy to establish itself as a leading cruise tourism destination in West Africa. He emphasized that the delegation’s mission was not only to network but also to spotlight Ghana’s rich tourism offerings.

“Ghana is uniquely positioned to become a cruise hub in West Africa,” said Mr. Aggrey. “By fostering stronger connections between our tourism and maritime sectors, we can deliver unforgettable shore experiences for cruise visitors.”

During the conference, the Ghanaian team met with cruise line executives to promote Ghana’s distinct blend of cultural heritage, historical landmarks, natural beauty, and lively coastal cities. The ports of Tema and Sekondi-Takoradi were highlighted as key entry points for cruise vessels seeking new and enriching destinations.

The GTA stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships between port authorities and tourism industry players to improve the overall experience for cruise passengers. They also emphasized the role of destination branding, digital marketing, and customised shore excursions in making Ghana a competitive player in the cruise market.

Ghana’s proposed shore excursions showcased a wide range of experiences including:

  • Tours to UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Cape Coast and Elmina Castles
  • Traditional music and dance performances
  • Visits to craft villages and local markets
  • Adventures in nature reserves
  • Culinary tours featuring Ghanaian cuisine

These offerings, all located within close proximity to cruise docking points, were presented as ideal for short, yet immersive visits.

The GTA encouraged local tour operators to innovate and create authentic experiences tailored specifically for cruise passengers, emphasizing the increasing demand for unique, culturally enriching excursions. They urged operators to position themselves as reliable partners for international cruise companies looking to diversify their African itineraries.
