Ghana Tourism Authority Director Calls for the Establishment of a Local Wine Industry

The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Alexander Nketiah, has called for the establishment of a wine industry in Ghana.

Speaking at the launch of Martin B Wines during this year’s Valentine’s Day celebrations, he highlighted the increasing importation of wines and the growing interest in wine consumption among Ghanaians.

Martin B Wines, produced in South Africa, offers varieties such as Red Blend, Sweet Sparkling White, Reserve Pinotage, and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, Mr. Nketiah expressed a strong desire for Ghana to transition from importing wines to producing its own.

“These wines from South Africa are of great quality and stand out on the market. But I only wish they were produced in Ghana. My hope is that as wine sellers continue to import, we can find ways to cultivate grapes, ferment them, and produce our own wines locally,” he stated.

He pointed out that grapes thrive in mountainous regions, suggesting that areas like Aburi, Amedzofe, and Abetifi could serve as potential hubs for grape farming.

“It is possible to grow grapes in Ghana. Research has shown that places with cooler climates, such as Aburi, Amedzofe, and Abetifi, are suitable for cultivation. If we invest in grape farming, we can establish a wine industry that will also boost Ghana’s tourism sector,” he added.

Mr. Nketiah urged importers and investors to explore opportunities in grape farming to develop commercial-scale production. He further emphasized that a local wine industry could create employment opportunities for the youth, spanning grape cultivation, wine production, packaging, and distribution.

Ms. Mavies Boakye, Chief Executive Officer of MB Ventures, importers of Martin B Wines, revealed that the company has a long-term vision of producing wines in Ghana.

“Ghana has vast arable land, and we intend to capitalize on this to begin local wine production and create employment for young people,” she stated.

She explained that Martin B Wines was launched on Valentine’s Day to celebrate love while offering a premium yet accessible option for social gatherings.

“Our wines are made from different grape varieties and have a low alcohol content, making them suitable for a wide range of consumers,” she added.

While advocating for the development of Ghana’s wine industry, both Mr. Nketiah and Ms. Boakye also stressed the importance of responsible drinking, urging consumers to drink in moderation and avoid drink-driving.
