Ghana to Launch Chip-Embedded Passports on April 28 as Part of Passport System Overhaul.

Ghana will begin issuing chip-embedded passports on Monday, 28th April 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s passport administration reforms. This was announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The new e-passports, first unveiled on 2nd December 2024, come equipped with enhanced biometric features to boost the security of travel documents. Each passport includes a microchip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and photographic data, along with a range of visible and hidden anti-fraud features.
These advanced passports will replace the current biometric versions and are designed to meet international standards. They also celebrate Ghanaian culture, incorporating Adinkra symbols such as Fawohodie—symbolizing freedom and independence—and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu, which represents democracy and unity.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, 23rd April, Mr Ablakwa emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance passport security, eliminate middlemen, and ensure greater transparency in the application process.
As part of the 2025 reform package, the Ministry will also introduce 24-hour passport processing, home delivery services, an electronic application tracking system, and a 30% reduction in processing fees.
“Our goal is to deliver a modern, citizen-focused passport service that is efficient and immune to third-party manipulation,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
