Ghana and Morocco take steps towards implementing visa-free travel

Ghana and Morocco have agreed to take steps toward waiving visa requirements for all categories of travelers between the two nations, aiming to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that the agreement would be submitted to both countries’ parliaments for ratification in the coming weeks.

“We have also committed to enhancing cooperation in agribusiness, tourism, and security,” he stated following discussions with Morocco’s Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil.

Describing the meeting as “productive and reassuring,” Mr. Ablakwa also addressed concerns regarding social media reports alleging violence against Africans in Morocco.

He noted that the Moroccan Ambassador strongly denied claims that 700 Africans had been killed in Morocco, clarifying that the widely circulated video referenced an old border incident from June 24, 2022.

“The footage in question pertains to a past border incident on June 24, 2022, which tragically resulted in the loss of 23 lives. The incident was investigated by both Moroccan and Spanish authorities,” Mr. Ablakwa explained.

He further assured that “no Ghanaian casualties were recorded.”

Beyond diplomatic and security discussions, the minister announced that Morocco has doubled its annual scholarships for Ghanaian students, increasing the number from 90 to 180 starting this year.

Before his meeting with the Moroccan Ambassador, Mr. Ablakwa also engaged with the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Sergei Berdnikov, to discuss various aspects of bilateral cooperation.

“Ghana remains committed to its longstanding foreign policy of positive neutrality and continues to serve as a credible advocate for global peace,” the Minister reaffirmed.
