Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia met with Hollywood actor Idris Elba yesterday to explore how to grow Africa’s creative arts economy.
Dr. Bawumia stated in a Facebook post that they discussed ways to finance Ghana’s creative arts industry as well as plans for integrating it into the global financial ecosystem.
He said, “Many African industry players are locked out of the global payments ecosystem, and we therefore discussed the proposed implementation of a new system leveraging blockchain technology to assist them and ensure that they get paid for their music and arts no matter where in the world it is used commercially.”
“Given Ghana’s reasonably robust digital payment system, the new system is scheduled to go live later this year. “My gratitude to Idris Elba for his dedication to the growth of the African creative arts economy,” parts of the message stated.
During a visit to the Jubilee House in February 2023, Idris Elba stated to President Akufo-Addo that he and his collaborators had begun the groundwork to facilitate the construction of a film studio in Ghana and throughout West Africa.
The actor explained that, while much may be accomplished in Africa’s film business, resources are limited.
As a result, Idris Elba was certain that the project, if completed, would be strong and competitive enough to entice filmmakers to choose Ghana for their productions.
