George Quaye to bring Soyinka’s classic Death and the King’s Horseman to the stage this August

Renowned theatre director George Quaye, one of Africa’s most gifted stage creatives, is set to bring Wole Soyinka’s celebrated play Death and the King’s Horseman to the National Theatre in Accra this August.

The production premieres on Saturday, 23 August, with performances at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. It will continue on 24, 30, and 31 August at the same times.

This staging is a collaboration between the National Theatre, Image Bureau, and April Communications, with sponsorship from Stanbic Bank, Bills Savings & Loans, The Luckiest, and MTN.

Written by Nigeria’s Nobel Prize-winning dramatist, the play is among Africa’s most acclaimed works. It examines themes of duty, tradition, and the tension between indigenous culture and colonial influence.

George Quaye, known for his meticulous storytelling and striking stagecraft, previously directed the Ghanaian run of Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not to Blame to critical acclaim. He promises audiences a world-class performance that stays true to Soyinka’s text while offering fresh, contemporary relevance.

The production will feature stellar acting, innovative set designs, and top-tier lighting and sound. Organisers describe it as “more than entertainment” — a cultural experience that reflects on African identity and heritage.
