Dallas Cowboys’ Sam Williams kicks off off-season cultural heritage tour in Ghana

In a profound journey of self-discovery and reconnection, Dallas Cowboys’ defensive end Sam Williams has arrived in Ghana to begin his first-ever off-season cultural heritage tour.

Sam Williams welcomed with traditional Ghanaian ceremony at Kotoka International Airport.

The 26-year-old NFL star touched down at Kotoka International Airport over the weekend, greeted by a warm and vibrant welcome that included a traditional cultural troupe and a royal VIP escort—an ideal start to his deeply personal voyage.

Williams, who was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, is part of a growing group of Black American athletes choosing Ghana not just as a travel destination but as a gateway to reconnect with their ancestral roots. For Williams, who is visiting Africa for the first time, this trip represents much more than relaxation. It’s about rediscovering identity, healing, and forming a deeper connection with his heritage.

“This is just amazing,” Williams said to Ghanaian media upon his arrival. “I hope to recharge after a challenging season, reconnect with my roots through Ghana’s beautiful tourist spots, and come back stronger for the next season.”

The trip follows a difficult year for Williams, who was expected to make a major impact for the Cowboys in 2024 but suffered a debilitating ACL injury that kept him off the field. With plans for a September return, this Ghanaian tour serves as a pivotal moment—not only for physical recovery but also for personal reflection and renewal.

Organized by AfriConnect Travel Group LLC of Dallas in partnership with Cation Ghana Ltd, the tour is designed to immerse Williams in the rich cultural and historical fabric of Ghana. The week-long journey will include a solemn visit to the Assin Manso Slave River, a poignant site marking the final stop for many enslaved Africans before embarking on the Middle Passage, as well as guided tours of Cape Coast and Elmina Castles.

Additional highlights will feature a reflective retreat at Coconut Grove Resort, a scenic visit to Akosombo for a traditional royal durbar and naming ceremony, and luxurious accommodations at BridgeView Resort. The itinerary offers a balance of solemn historical reflection and vibrant cultural experiences, such as boat cruises, water sports, and culinary explorations.

Williams will also participate in radio and TV interviews during his stay, sharing his experiences and thoughts on the significance of his journey. The tour will culminate in the AfriConnect Beach Extravaganza, a celebration of music, community, and Black cultural pride, along with meet-and-greets, golf, and a tour of Accra’s food and city scene.

“This trip is about connecting with roots, embracing the culture, and celebrating the journey,” said Dr. Eb Eshun, CEO of AfriConnect Travel Group. “We are honored to guide Sam through this meaningful exploration of Ghana’s history and culture.”

For Williams and many Black American athletes, this trip is far more than just a vacation. It’s a homecoming of the heart, a powerful reminder that while the NFL is where their stories unfold, Africa is where many of those stories truly began.
