One-Week Celebration of Life Held for Lumba

Thousands gathered at Independence Square in Accra last Saturday to observe the one-week memorial of Ghana’s highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

Family, fans, political figures, and fellow musicians paid tribute through prayers, performances, and heartfelt messages, celebrating more than three decades of his impact on Ghanaian music and culture.

The crowd sang and danced to timeless classics including Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, and Theresa—songs that defined eras and touched generations.

Dignitaries and Tributes

The event attracted a host of dignitaries, reflecting the national admiration for the late icon.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described Daddy Lumba as one of the greatest musicians in Ghana’s history and contributed GH¢100,000 to support preparations for the final funeral rites.

Other attendees included former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.

Musical Performances

A thunderous welcome greeted Amakye Dede, whose electrifying performance lifted the mood of the crowd.

Highlife stars Kofi Nti and Kay Bless delivered stirring renditions that evoked nostalgia among longtime admirers.

Rapper Sarkodie, accompanied by his wife Tracy, joined industry greats Pat Thomas and Oheneba Kissi in honouring the music legend.

The Creative Arts Agency, in partnership with the Fosu family, organized the one-week observance as part of a series of events commemorating Daddy Lumba’s life and legacy.

The family announced that burial arrangements will be made public after consultations, with the funeral expected to take place in Kumasi.

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments after a short illness. He was 60 years old, born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta, Ashanti Region.
