Thousands to Gather at UG Sports Stadium for Daddy Lumba’s One-Week Observance on Saturday, August 30

Ghana is preparing for a massive gathering this Saturday, August 30, 2025, as the one-week observance for legendary highlife musician Daddy Lumba takes place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.

Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, the music icon passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. His family confirmed the news later that day, sending shockwaves of grief across the country and beyond.

In the weeks following his death, tributes poured in from all walks of life. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as well as leaders from both the NDC and NPP, expressed their condolences. Legendary musicians including Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede, and the Tagoe Sisters, alongside younger artistes, actors, and industry figures, also honoured his remarkable legacy.

Ahead of the ceremony, Daddy Lumba’s family formally informed government of his passing during a visit to the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, at Jubilee House on Monday, August 25. Speaking on behalf of the presidency, Mr. Debrah revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama shared a deep personal bond with the late musician.

“The President loved Daddy Lumba’s songs. When he sits in his car and sings along, you’d be amazed — so this is a great loss to us all,” Mr. Debrah said. “His music carried an emotional weight that touched countless lives and became part of our cultural fabric.”

The upcoming one-week observance is expected to attract thousands, much like the candlelight vigil at Independence Square a week after his passing. That event drew massive crowds both locally and internationally, with simultaneous tributes held in the UK, Germany, the US, and the Netherlands.

This Saturday’s memorial at UG Sports Stadium is set to be another historic moment of reflection and celebration, as fans, colleagues, politicians, and admirers gather to honour the man whose timeless hits such as Theresa, Aben Wo Ha, and Ohia Asem shaped generations.
