Who Was Daddy Lumba?

Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta near Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba began his music career at the age of 16. In 1983, he led the Juaben Secondary School choir.

After secondary school, he formed the Lumba Brothers group with his friends Yaw, Kwabena, and his then-girlfriend Theresa Abebrese.

With Theresa’s help, he traveled to Germany to pursue better opportunities. There, he met Ernest Nana Acheampong, another highlife icon, who introduced him to highlife music—up until then, Lumba had only performed gospel.

Together, they revived the Lumba Brothers brand and made their mark on Ghanaian music, beginning with their hit Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu.

Though they later parted ways, Daddy Lumba went on to build a solo career filled with timeless songs and a legacy that has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s music scene.
