The National Theatre was electrified on Saturday night as Chief Moomen’s latest stage production, Mansa Musa and a Trial of Lost Gold: The Prelude, enthralled audiences with its rich storytelling, cultural vibrancy, and historical depth.

The play delves into the legendary wealth and enduring legacy of Mansa Musa, the renowned 14th-century ruler of the Mali Empire. Through a compelling narrative filled with intrigue, power struggles, and a mystical quest for lost treasures, the production transported the audience back in time.
Blending poetry, music, and dance, the performance magnificently portrayed the grandeur of one of Africa’s most powerful empires. With a stellar cast, captivating choreography, and breathtaking set designs, the play fully immersed attendees in the splendor of ancient Mali. The intricate costumes and dramatic lighting further enhanced the production’s majestic and mystical atmosphere, delivering an unforgettable theatrical experience.
This remarkable performance came just days after a historic partnership was signed between UNESCO and Chief Moomen’s Bambu Heritage Productions. The agreement, signed on March 11 at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters by Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini and Chief Moomen, aims to promote African narratives and integrate the General History of Africa (GHA) into both formal and informal education.
“Our shared mission is to foster a collective African identity, celebrate our rich heritage, and contribute to a more just and inclusive future through the reappropriation and dissemination of African history,” stated Stefania Giannini.
Chief Moomen emphasized the importance of storytelling in asserting Africa’s culture and identity. “We want to inspire and empower the continent and its youth to shape their own destiny,” he said.
Following the March 15 performance, Chief Moomen expressed his excitement about the production, revealing that it is merely a prelude to a larger theatrical project that will further explore Mansa Musa’s journey and legacy.
The audience, including dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and theatre lovers, responded with enthusiastic applause and standing ovations, lauding the production for its powerful storytelling and cultural significance.
