Chief Moomen: Writers Will Thrive in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Renowned playwright and poet Chief Moomen asserts that writers are not at risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).

He acknowledges that while AI can mimic certain technical aspects of writing, it lacks the depth, nuance, and human essence that define true artistry.

“The essence of creativity is something spiritual, and I don’t think a machine will ever replace that,” he emphasized.

Speaking as a special guest at Unplugged & Reconciled, a ‘sip and chat’ literary event organized by 365Mustang in Accra on Thursday, March 6, Chief Moomen highlighted the distinction between AI-generated content and human creativity.

“If AI dominates mainstream writing, we will be left with mechanical outputs that lack the natural and emotional depth of human interaction,” he explained.

Rather than eliminating writers, Moomen believes AI will elevate human creativity to a premium. As AI-generated content becomes commonplace, he predicts a growing demand for authenticity and originality, making skilled writers even more valuable.

“AI may reduce the number of writers in the industry, but those who remain will be highly sought after. In a world saturated with machine-generated content, people will crave human creativity,” he noted.

Unplugged & Reconciled was held at Full Option Lounge in Accra as a space for literary discourse, creative synergy, and networking among writers, readers, poets, storytellers, and critics. Unlike a traditional book club, the event took an avant-garde approach, addressing the decline in reading and writing engagement due to digital distractions.

The event featured open discussions, thought-provoking prompts, and spontaneous creative challenges—blending elements of a think tank and open mic to inspire participants to reignite their literary passion.

Kingsley Elikem Doe, founder of 365Mustang and curator of Unplugged & Reconciled, likened the event to a sanctuary for literary creatives, providing a space for them to rediscover their love for reading and writing amidst the dominance of social media, streaming platforms, and bite-sized content.

“As the world changes due to rapid technological advancements, attention spans are shrinking, and books are constantly competing with notifications and viral trends,” he observed. “While we can’t stop this shift, we can certainly influence how we engage with literature.”
