Opera enthusiasts in Accra can look forward to an unforgettable night as the highly anticipated Accra Goes to Opera concert takes the spotlight on November 24, 2024, at ICGC Christ Temple, East Bush Road.
The concert promises an enchanting fusion of classical music and opera, celebrating African cultural unity and artistry. Headlining the event is Lumina, a talented Ghanaian music group known for their unique blend of opera with Ghanaian influences. Fresh off their acceptance into the prestigious American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) Opera Studio program in Austria, Lumina will captivate audiences with their recomposed Ghanaian pieces and operatic pop arrangements, transforming traditional sounds through world-class opera techniques.
Joining Lumina on stage are renowned South African opera singers Tiego and Dorothy, whose performances will further bridge classical European opera with African cultural expression. This collaboration is set to offer a powerful, unifying experience, highlighting a shared African artistic vision.
Artistic Director Amos George Tetteh shared Lumina’s dedication to innovation in opera: “We are committed to creating and presenting mind-blowing pieces by rearranging traditional works into contemporary creations. Patrons will experience an exciting event at Accra Goes to Opera.”
The event aims to make opera accessible to wider audiences in Ghana, laying the groundwork for an annual series that celebrates the diverse interpretations of opera across Africa. Tetteh emphasized the concert’s cultural mission, bringing together local and international talents to inspire new audiences and deepen appreciation for opera in Ghana.
Accra Goes to Opera is not just a performance—it’s a celebration of African unity and artistic collaboration, bringing performers from varied backgrounds to share in the transformative power of music. As Accra eagerly anticipates this cultural highlight, the concert is poised to establish a lasting tradition in Ghana’s arts scene, celebrating the timeless beauty of opera and its connection with Ghanaian audiences.
