Daddy Lumba’s one-week observance set for August 30 in Accra, with funeral to follow in Kumasi

The one-week observance for the late Ghanaian music legend, Daddy Lumba, will take place on Saturday, August 30, in Accra. The venue for the event is yet to be confirmed. The final funeral rites, however, will be held in Kumasi, his hometown.

This announcement was made by Kofi Owusu, head of the Lumba family (Abusuapanyin), following a formal visit to the Manhyia Palace to inform the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the musician’s passing.

According to Mr. Owusu, Daddy Lumba was a royal of the Asante Kingdom, and as such, it was imperative to first seek the counsel and blessings of the Asantehene before announcing funeral arrangements.

“Led by some chiefs, the Asantehene warmly received us and understood the purpose of our visit,” he said. “He reminded us that Lumba was not just a son but a royal of the Asante Kingdom. As family elders, we respected his position and knew what needed to be done for Lumba’s final journey.”

Mr. Owusu explained that while the one-week observance can be held in Accra, the funeral itself must take place in Kumasi to honour Lumba’s royal lineage. “We must return Otumfuo’s son to him in Kumasi for the final rites,” he added.

He also noted that the family will extend a formal notice to the Ga Mantse out of respect, as the one-week event will be hosted in the capital.

Regarding the venue, he disclosed that deliberations are ongoing, especially following the overwhelming turnout at the candlelight vigil held at Independence Square on Saturday, August 2. “Given the large crowd that attended the vigil and our initial plans, it’s clear we need a larger venue to ensure safety and avoid any chaos,” he said.

Meanwhile, a second candlelight vigil is scheduled to be held in Kumasi at the Heroes’ Park, Kumasi Sports Stadium, on Saturday, August 9, to honour the late highlife legend.
