President Mahama Applauds Black Star Marathon as a Catalyst for Ghana’s Tourism Development

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Absa Black Star Marathon, describing it as an increasingly significant part of Ghana’s tourism landscape.

Speaking at the opening ceremony in Accra on Saturday, July 26, President Mahama said,

“The Black Star Marathon has become part of Ghana’s tourism experience. We now call it the Black Star Experience. My presence here today underscores how important this initiative is to us.”

He expressed delight at the international participation, noting that athletes from 28 different countries had gathered for the event. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the marathon and helping it grow into one of the best on the continent.

“I’m pleased to see such a vibrant turnout. The diversity of participants reflects the global appeal this event is building,” he stated.

Although he confessed to never having run a marathon himself, President Mahama applauded the determination of those who took part.

“I’ve never run a marathon. I honestly don’t have the stamina for it—but I truly admire everyone who attempts it,” he said with a smile.

The 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon featured runners from around the globe competing in various race categories, including 42km, 21km, and 10km. The event successfully combined athletics and cultural celebration, further positioning Ghana as a leading destination for international sports tourism.
