The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ghana has launched the 2025 Korean Cultural Festival, with Sim Majorley as its main attraction. This original stage play, produced by Latif Abubakar’s Globe Productions, reimagines the classic Korean novel Simcheongjeon (The Story of Sim Cheong) through a Ghanaian lens.

The play will show on August 2, 2025, in Tema, and on August 9 at the Accra International Conference Centre, with performances at 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
Speaking at the launch, Ambassador Park Kyongsig described the play as a symbol of creative diplomacy. He highlighted the partnership as a bridge that brings Ghanaian and Korean cultures closer.
“This story, told by Ghanaian performers in a Ghanaian setting, represents the spirit of cultural collaboration,” the ambassador noted.
Directed by Latif Abubakar, Sim Majorley follows a devoted daughter who offers herself to the sea gods in hopes of restoring her father’s sight. While the narrative remains true to its Korean origin, the adaptation integrates Ga language, music, and symbolism.

“We wanted to preserve the heart of the Korean story while grounding it in Ghanaian culture,” said Abubakar. “This project promotes creative fusion and cross-cultural understanding.”
Beyond the theatre production, the festival will feature K-pop dance performances, Korean food booths, and cultural exhibitions. Organizers plan to expand access by including a performance in Tema, reaching audiences outside the capital.
Ambassador Kyongsig emphasized that the event goes beyond entertainment. “It’s a cultural bridge that deepens friendship and shared understanding between our nations.”
Abubakar is known for socially-driven theatre. His past collaborations with the Spanish and Italian Embassies tackled civic and social themes using drama and humor. With Sim Majorley, he continues to use the stage to inspire unity and spark dialogue.
“Let’s keep telling stories that move hearts and build connections,” he said.
Tickets for Sim Majorley go on sale in late July 2025, and high demand is expected.
