Speaking at the opening session of the Ghana-China Business Summit held in Accra on Monday, June 23, Madam Houadjeto highlighted tourism as a key driver of economic growth. The summit seeks to deepen economic cooperation and attract new investments between Ghana and China, with a focus on trade, tourism, and other vital sectors.

“Tourism is one of the most important sectors in Ghana. Our goal is to become the second-highest income earner contributing to the GDP,” she stated.

She noted that Ghana’s diverse cultural heritage, natural attractions, and historical sites give it a unique edge as a leading tourist destination in West Africa. To unlock this potential, the GTA is implementing several strategic projects and seeking investment to upgrade tourism infrastructure.

Among the projects mentioned are plans to revamp and promote iconic sites such as Mole and Kakum National Parks. These efforts include the development of eco-lodges and conservation infrastructure to enhance visitor experience and sustainability.

Additionally, the GTA is working towards building Ghana’s first modern amusement park, along with new event centres in Accra and the Central Region to boost cultural tourism and events-based travel.

Sustainability remains a core focus of Ghana’s tourism strategy. Madam Houadjeto revealed plans to help hospitality facilities transition from reliance on the national power grid to solar energy, a move aimed at reducing operational costs and enhancing Ghana’s appeal as an eco-friendly destination.

“We are mobilising funds to support hotels and hospitality providers in adopting solar energy solutions,” she said.

The CEO also outlined intensified marketing campaigns targeting tourists from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and the African diaspora. She stressed that domestic tourism will also continue to receive significant attention through public awareness drives and promotional initiatives.
