Comedy is a powerful tool for raising social awareness – Comedian Oh Joo

Ghanaian comedian Oh Joo is calling for greater recognition of comedy’s deeper societal impact, urging people to see it as more than just a source of laughter and amusement.

In his view, comedy is not merely entertainment but a powerful platform for initiating important conversations, shaping public opinion, and promoting social awareness—similar to the roles played by music and theatre.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Graphic Showbiz, Oh Joo stressed that when used with purpose, comedy can break down barriers and engage audiences on sensitive or controversial issues.

He emphasized that comedians have an important role to play in national dialogue.

“Many people dismiss comedy as just fun and games, but the reality is, it’s incredibly powerful. Comedy puts people at ease, and in that moment of laughter, you can deliver a message that truly resonates. It’s a communication strategy as effective as what musicians and playwrights use,” he said.

Addressing societal challenges such as mental health issues, political unrest, and social inequalities, Oh Joo called on comedians to move beyond entertainment and actively contribute to societal reflection and positive change.

He urged fellow comedians to use their creativity and influence to tackle pressing social issues, raise awareness, and drive progress.

Citing Ghanaian comedy legend Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) as an example, Oh Joo acknowledged the significant strides made in using humor to address serious matters. However, he believes more can be done.

“KSM has been phenomenal over the years with his satirical approach, addressing real issues through humor. It’s truly commendable. But it shouldn’t stop there. We all have voices, and collectively, we can achieve much more. His efforts are just the beginning,” Oh Joo noted.

Oh Joo, who recently hosted Turd Talks—a TED Talk-style comedy show with a Ghanaian twist—reaffirmed his commitment to using humor for advocacy.

The event, held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra, combined satire with serious themes, with a special focus on autism awareness, a cause close to his heart.

He explained to Graphic Showbiz that the inspiration behind Turd Talks was to highlight autism, an issue he believes has not received enough public attention.

“I have friends who are on the autism spectrum, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges they face due to a lack of societal understanding and support. Autism is real, and it’s about time we treat it with the seriousness it deserves. With Turd Talks, my goal was to open people’s eyes while keeping them entertained. That’s the sweet spot for me,” he said with a smile.
