Honouring Northern Ghana: “Roots Reimagined” Event Highlights Culture, Cuisine, and Fashion

Accra was full of energy on Saturday night as Roots by Linnan hosted Roots Reimagined, a vibrant event celebrating the culture of northern Ghana.

The night brought together fashion lovers, foodies, and culture enthusiasts for a unique experience. Guests enjoyed traditional performances and a rich variety of northern dishes such as tubaani, wasawasa, and gable. They also sampled locally brewed drinks like pito and samia.

The highlight of the event was the Roots Reimagined fashion show. Models walked the runway in clothing made from handwoven smock fabrics created by women in Ghana’s Upper West Region. Each piece—whether a skirt, jacket, or dress—offered a fresh take on Ghana’s iconic textile.

A live xylophonist performed during the show, giving the runway a warm, earthy vibe. To connect more deeply with heritage, the brand named every piece in the collection using northern Ghanaian words.

Roots Reimagined blends tradition and innovation,” said Perfectual Linnan Labik, founder and creative director of Roots by Linnan.
It’s our way of celebrating northern Ghanaian women and showing that our fabric still matters in today’s world. My goal is to keep spotlighting the north through fashion, food, music, and stories. I’m also eager to work with government and creatives to grow this vision.

The event was more than a fashion showcase. It celebrated traditional artistry and highlighted how culture can drive modern design and community empowerment.

Founded in 2015, Roots by Linnan is a social enterprise that champions northern Ghana’s textile heritage. The brand partners with women artisans to create authentic smock fabrics and turns them into contemporary fashion pieces. Its mission is clear—preserve heritage, empower communities, and bring northern voices to the global stage.
