The National Theatre of Ghana is set to honor the transformative power of the arts through a series of celebrations for World Poetry Day, World Theatre Day, and World Dance Day. These global observances highlight the impact of poetry, theatre, and dance in fostering creativity, peace, and social change.

The celebration kicks off with World Poetry Day on March 21, 2025, established by UNESCO in 1999. This year’s theme, “Poetry for Peace and Unity,” underscores the role of poetry in promoting harmony and creative expression. The National Theatre will commemorate the occasion with selected schools in Accra, including Osu, Saint Peter’s R/C, Salem Basic, and Presbyterian Cluster of Schools. Guest poets will engage students in discussions on the significance of poetry, poetry recitals, and writing competitions to inspire young minds to express their thoughts on peace and unity.
On March 27, 2025, the Theatre will mark World Theatre Day, themed “Theatre and a Culture of Peace.” In collaboration with the Senior Correctional Home (Borstal Home), the National Drama Company will stage a play emphasizing peace, tolerance, and non-violence. The initiative aims to support rehabilitation and social reintegration through theatre. Additionally, the team will host scriptwriting discussions and stage activity workshops to equip inmates with creative storytelling skills. Established by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1962, World Theatre Day continues to promote the significance of theatre worldwide.
Finally, on April 29, 2025, the National Theatre will commemorate World Dance Day, focusing on its therapeutic benefits for mental and emotional well-being. The National Dance Company will conduct dance therapy sessions at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, aligning with the theme “Dance and Social Cohesion.” The event will include dance workshops, performances, and movement-based therapy, offering inmates an avenue for self-expression, rehabilitation, and healing through dance.
Through these initiatives, the National Theatre of Ghana reaffirms its commitment to using the arts as a tool for education, social change, and community engagement.
