The 2025 edition of the Aboakyer Festival, celebrated by the Effutu people of the Central Region, has been officially launched.
This year’s festival, themed Championing Our Ancestral Legacy, saw a significant turnout of traditional leaders, residents, and corporate representatives, all pledging their support to ensure a successful celebration.
Addressing Public Health Concerns
During the launch, the Paramount Chief of the Effutu Traditional Area, Neenyi Ghartey VII, emphasized the urgent need for improved sanitation in light of a recent cholera outbreak in the municipality.
“One critical issue I want to highlight is public health. Towards the end of last year, we learned of a cholera outbreak in the Agona area. Unfortunately, the situation has now reached Effutu, claiming one or two lives already,” he stated.
He attributed the outbreak to poor sanitation, particularly along the coastline, where open defecation remains a major concern.
“We have allowed this to happen due to poor environmental upkeep. Our surroundings, especially the beachfront, are unkempt, with open defecation being a widespread practice. We appreciate our health officials for their efforts in managing the situation, but we must all take responsibility for maintaining cleaner surroundings,” he urged.
Call for Stricter Sanitation Laws
To address the issue, Neenyi Ghartey VII called for stricter enforcement of sanitation laws.
“We urge the Environmental Health Officers to collaborate with the Ghana Health Service and security agencies to arrest individuals caught openly defecating at the beach. This is a serious matter, and we must hold ourselves accountable,” he cautioned.

Beyond its cultural importance, the Paramount Chief highlighted the economic benefits of the Aboakyer Festival, urging businesses to invest in and support the event.
“Hosting a festival of this magnitude requires substantial resources. We invite the business community to partner with us in making the Effutu Aboakyer Festival an unforgettable experience,” he noted.
He also encouraged festivalgoers to uphold discipline and hospitality throughout the celebrations.
“Let us ensure a peaceful and orderly festival while upholding the values of hospitality that define the Effutu people,” he concluded.
