Ghanaian music duo Lali x Lola has appealed to the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) organisers to reinstate the Best Performing Group category in this year’s awards.
In a statement released on February 3, 2025, the duo expressed their disappointment over the absence of the category, emphasizing its importance in recognizing the contributions of music groups to Ghana’s music industry.
“Over the past few years, there has been a significant resurgence of talented and impactful music groups in Ghana. These groups are making tremendous contributions to the growth of the industry, with chart-topping hits, compelling live performances, and a renewed sense of collaboration. Notable groups such as DopeNation, Keche, Team Eternity, Bhad Mayors, and ourselves—Lali x Lola—are just a few examples of the vibrant collective energy driving the industry forward,” they stated.
As twins and passionate advocates for collaboration and innovation, Lali x Lola believe that bringing back the Best Performing Group category would celebrate creative unity and inspire more artistes to work together.
The TGMA Board removed the category in 2022 due to concerns about competitiveness, with Robert Klah, Head of Public Events and Communications for Charterhouse, stating that there weren’t enough active music groups at the time. However, with the resurgence of dynamic duos and groups in recent years, many stakeholders are now urging TGMA to reconsider.
With increasing calls from the industry, including support from groups like DopeNation and Team Eternity Ghana, the conversation around reinstating this category has gained momentum. Will TGMA respond to the growing demand?
