President Akufo-Addo Commissions Two Modern DMU Trains in Landmark Moment for Ghana’s Railway Sector

In a historic step for Ghana’s transportation sector, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned two state-of-the-art Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains for the 97-kilometer Tema-to-Mpakadan standard gauge railway line.

This milestone is the result of a successful international collaboration between Polish train manufacturer Pesa SA and Ghana-based infrastructure and financing company VAOB Group. Marking Pesa SA’s debut in West Africa, these cutting-edge trains showcase Poland’s growing influence in global infrastructure and its commitment to fostering partnerships in Africa.

The trains, featuring advanced engineering and modern amenities, provide passengers with an exceptional travel experience. Highlights include ergonomic seating, air-conditioned interiors, sensor-operated gates, emergency exits, communication systems, and power outlets, all designed to prioritize comfort, safety, and efficiency.

President Akufo-Addo, accompanied by ministers, the Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, and other dignitaries, took a ceremonial ride aboard DMU001 from Tema to Afienya, highlighting the transformative potential of these new trains. The project aims to enhance connectivity, promote regional trade, and accelerate Ghana’s railway modernization efforts.

For Pesa SA, this achievement cements its status as a global leader in railway manufacturing. “We are proud to introduce our technology to West Africa and support Ghana’s vision for a modern railway system,” said a Pesa SA representative.

VAOB Group, which played a pivotal role in project origination and financing, emphasized the importance of collaboration. “This initiative reflects our mission to drive development through partnerships. It’s an honour to work with global innovators like Pesa SA to benefit communities and boost economic growth,” said the company’s CEO.

This project is more than a technological advancement—it is a symbol of Ghana’s dedication to strengthening its infrastructure, empowering its citizens, and fostering international cooperation for a more connected future.
