Joy FM broadcaster Kofi Hayford has expressed concern over the lack of respect often shown toward the disc jockeying profession. According to him, some Ghanaians have long viewed DJs as inferior, disregarding the artistry and dedication involved in their work.
Speaking as a guest on the Road to Guinness Ghana DJ Awards 2024 show on Joy Prime on Saturday, October 25, 2024, Kofi urged against this dismissive attitude. He commended Merqury Republic, organizers of the DJ awards, for supporting the industry with their event now in its 12th year.
In conversation with host Michelle Agyekum, Kofi recounted a personal experience where a former schoolmate contacted him, expressing disappointment over his choice of career as a radio broadcaster. The acquaintance remarked that he expected Kofi to become a doctor due to his academic excellence. Ironically, about a year later, the same acquaintance reached out again, asking Kofi to feature his younger brother’s music on Kofi’s Tuesday radio show, The Overdrive on Joy FM.
Reflecting on the incident, Kofi remarked, “What kind of disrespect is that?”
Known for his engaging music presentations, Kofi believes that while the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards have brought increased recognition to DJs, there are still those who fail to appreciate the profession’s value and impact.
