U.S. Embassy Updates Ghanaians on World Cup Visa Process

The U.S. Embassy in Ghana has delivered a major update for football fans. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, the embassy has significantly streamlined the visa application process. This move ensures that Ghanaians can plan their trips to North America with greater confidence and speed.

Wait times for B1/B2 visitor visas have plummeted. In 2024, applicants faced a 15-month wait. Today, thanks to a surge in consular staff, the waiting period is less than one week. This dramatic reduction is part of a broader effort to welcome the world for the upcoming tournament.

Officials have stressed the importance of selecting the correct visa category. Fans and tourists must apply for the B1/B2 visa. Journalists and media professionals are required to use the I-class visa. Applying under the wrong category can lead to an automatic denial. The embassy also warned against using “visa agents” who promise guaranteed results, as these often lead to lifetime bans.

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. While a match ticket does not guarantee a visa, the new FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (FIFA PASS) offers a faster route for ticket holders. The embassy advises travellers not to book non-refundable flights until their visa is physically in hand. This careful approach ensures a smooth journey to the world’s biggest sporting stage.
